Match Report Buxton U9 Young Bucks VS New Mills U9 Wasps 19/11/23

This morning was a real David vs Goliath morning.

As the rain poured down on the Wasps they looked up at their towering opponents and did not appear to be their confident selves

The whistle went and instead of going straight for the sting and take the opposition off guard, the Wasps froze. Was it the weather?, Was it the size sheer size of the Young Bucks? We couldn’t be sure but we were holding back.

Most of the team were falling back in defence but weren’t really committing to the tackles and clearances. The Wasps have had tougher games than this but for the first time this season, heads dropped. The half time whistle went which was somewhat of a relief.

The half time conversations were about reminding the team who they are. Forgetting about who their opponent is. To be the determined wasps that we are and let’s take the second half one goal at a time.

The team heard all that was discussed at half time. They were back on the pitch with a different look in their eyes. They wanted the ball and they wanted a goal. They pushed and they pushed. What appeared to be fear in the first half had gone. They were going in for some real challenges and the size of the opposition didn’t matter.

Rocco attempted a couple of screamers which bounced off the woodwork.

Dylan took a beautiful shot that was inches wide.

Alfie took a blast but it didn’t have the power that he needed.

Then came Kai, this kid didn’t stop running the whole game. From taking a shot on goal to running all the way back and defending against counter attacks.

He set up a nice ball to Dylan who slipped it through to Rocco, he selflessly chips it back to Kai who puts it the back of the net.

Coming off the pitch was completely different than when they went on it. A really difficult game but smiles beaming and a team proud of their second half effort. The Goliath that stood before them at the beginning of that match no longer seemed that big. The Wasps had made a molehill out of mountain and learned that the biggest opposition can be their own mindset.
