What a way to end the season….. a nice, bright spring day … and a derby against the Wasps. We’ve played each other so many times in matches and in training we know them inside out. The cliché is that the form book goes out of the window….however both teams more than lived upto their form and stepped up their game several notches.
The only unknown entity was Ted, who recently joined the Wasps (but from training it’s clear to see he’s a cracking player who loves football)
The Bees had a full squad today, so we started with Stanley in goal, William and Rocco in defence, Leo, Brooke and Millie across the middle and CW7 as our main striker. Dayvid and Callum would make big impacts when they came on later in the half.
Millie was made captain for the day and after a pep talk about how we needed to approach the game, we were ready to light the touch paper ……
A typical game against a well known opponent, it started with the teams being a little coy to begin with. The Bees were a little sluggish and there was a bit of apprehension and expectation a teammate would pick up a loose ball. The fight was lacking in the Bees……
The Wasps had a goal kick which came out to Leo, who controlled it and passed to Charlie who got the ball past Frankie C and scored ⚽️
The Bees were riding their luck as the Wasps were dangerous in attack with Dylan and Rocco T. Ted was everywhere for the Wasps defence.
Dayvid and Callum came on and were immediately involved. Callum ‘cool as a cucumber’ on the ball, tackled and passed forward constantly. Dayvid shone throughout this game, he was involved and not only made some fantastic tackles, but some amazing passes to the forward players… his confidence is growing with every game 👍🏻 Brooke was involved all afternoon, she will never give up and will keep running 👊🏻 our engine room that keeps the team moving forward.
The Wasps had a break and a sure fire goal, but Leo managed to clear it off the line to safety.
Another Wasps attack came piling forward but Stanley made a worldie of a save to push it out 🤲🏻. Half time and a reality check for the Bees… re-focus and get moving, fight for the second ball.
We kicked off the 2nd half and despite the Bees looking sharper, the Wasps were on the attack, but another quality save by ‘safe hands’ kept the Wasps at bay. Millie was working well on the left making some great runs and had some good shots all afternoon. Leo on the right was having a great battle with Dylan.
When the Wasps broke forward, Leo was tracking back and his speed enabled him to intercept any attack and get the ball safe. Rocco K was great in defence, Will was also solid and has grown so much this season.
Another counter attack from the Bees saw Charlie with the ball and manage to get it over the Wasps keeper ⚽️
This really was end to end football. A cracking ding dong of a derby. A corner for the Bees came across, Will was poised, controlled it ..and pulled the trigger… it went just wide (I said it last week, that goal is coming….. cup final Will 😉)
When the ref blew the whistle for full time, coaches hugged, everyone shook hands.
Todays player of the match was decided by Rick, it was awarded to Leo for consistent high performance for the team 👍🏻
It’s been a rollercoaster for the Bees this season, players coming and going, but we more than held our own with every opponent.
Thank you to each player and every parent / guardian for supporting us week after week. Thanks to Rick for his never ending analysis and advice and coaching for the team.
It’s been a pleasure to coach the Bees. The next game we play as ‘The Bees’ will be the cup final, so let’s go out in style 🐝
