With Christmas cheer in the air, 11 days before the festivities our U7s served up another Christmas treat for the coaches and supporters watching. This week we would be up against new opponents, who we would be playing twice in a row, Adswood United.
Neither side knew what to expect from their opponents, but what both sides provided was an entertaining thriller of a match. The Millers had a full squad this week therefore Kingsley took the gloves for the first half as usual, with this week’s captain Jude at left back.
Logan would start at centre back with Kit on the right. Elliott and Lily would play further forward through the middle. Thomas, Alistair and Leo were on hand from the subs bench to provide additional reinforcements when needed.
The game started with both sides trying to get onto the front foot. Logan was keeping chances to a minimum and playing the ball wide to Kit and Jude either side. Kit drove the team forward a lot in the first half down the right, doing his best to get crosses into the box for his on-rushing teammates.
Lily was at her tenacious best in the middle, not allowing Adswood time to settle on the ball. Unfortunately for the team, Lily got injured trying to tackle a player who then fell onto her leg, she needed to come off giving Thomas his chance to come on and make a difference.
Kit’s work on the right eventually paid off with a cross to Jude in the box eluding everyone and nestling into the bottom corner.
This sparked Adswood into further life but thanks to superb saves from Kingsley and tackling and calm play from Logan, they were unable to make too many chances count. Alistair and Leo would enter the field with Leo slotting into his new position at centre back.
Leo has thrived in this position since he moved into it, and showed his growing confidence again this week. Not only was he positionally great, he has a calm head when he wins the ball to pick the pass forward to send his team on the attack.
Jude was tireless on the left, working hard up and down the field, importantly helping at the back as well as trying to create for Elliott & Alistair.
At half time, we checked on Lily who wouldn’t be able to play in the second half, so the team rallied around to make sure she was ok and do their best for the second period.
Jude would take the gloves with Kingsley taking a break at the start of the second half. Adswood came out firing in the second half but superb work pressing forward from Logan and Elliott made sure the Mini-Millers kept winning the ball high up the field and if they broke through the initial press, Leo, Thomas and Kit would be there to make sure Jude had little to do.
The second half ebbed and flowed with a superb game of football on show. Each team putting pressure on the other with Kit managing to add a second to his tally for the match and 4th in two games. He has recently found his shooting boots and is flourishing playing from the right.
The goal of the game though came from a well-crafted move started at the back by Leo, who played a free kick to Logan, who passed to Thomas who looped the ball to the back post where both Alistair and Elliott were waiting, Elliott smashed the ball home and it was a superb team move which was what was amazing to see.
Each game, this team showcases the fantastic passing football they are capable of.
The team again each showed what they can do with Alistair tackling and driving forward well on the right, Elliott tireless further forward, Logan pressed really well and was unlucky not to get a goal, Thomas with a supreme assist but superb effort getting up and down the left side. Captain Jude made some super saves but worked just as hard going forward, Lily’s awesome bravery as she was unlucky to get injured, Kit’s great work ethic and crossing down the right, Leo’s defensive mastery at the back but the final mention goes to Kingsley who, when he came on in the second half did his best to get his shots away and with the last kick of the game smashed one into the bottom corner from distance. An awesome finish to an awesome game
A fabulous game for the neutrals to watch from both teams and the players had huge smiles after the match – if they keep providing this much entertainment, the rest of the season is going to be epic…
