For the U7s this week we had another new experience, playing against a team we played previously, Buxton Young Bucks Yellow. The previous match had been a good learning experience for the Mini-Millers and they were keen to show how they had developed a month after the first fixture.
Before the game we focused again on teamwork and winning the ball for each other and working together to pass forward.
Back to a full squad this week with Kingsley starting in goal, Alistair playing on the left side, Leo on the right, Logan at centre back with Kit and Elliott through the middle pushing forward. Jude, Thomas and Lily would be our game-changers this week, with Lily taking the armband for her turn to lead the team.
The classic football adage of a game of two halves certainly summed up this game. The first half was end to end action with both sides playing fabulous football.
Kingsley was at his best between the sticks, stopping shots not only with his hands and feet, but even took one to the chest while on the floor from a previous save, such brave keeping!
Logan loves to drive forward with the ball but did really well to try and maintain his position and cover Kingsley.
Alistair showed his confidence is building again and although didn’t get forward as much as he would like, he kept the Yellows in a good position with superb tackling, effort and determination to push New Mills forward.
Leo, fresh off two scoring weeks was keen to add another to his tally and went close in the first half. Leo’s tackling and passing were really on show in this game too.
Elliott was driving forward as always and is really growing in confidence, pressing the ball high up the field, winning the ball and or even taking shots from his fast press. Kit was doing his best to keep up and the two of them started to work well together to press Buxton into mistakes high up the pitch. Our game-changers came on with Jude driving forward with some good runs and maintaining the great work alongside Elliott to press high up the field.
Thomas and Lily provided further steel at the back, with Lily thriving in her captaincy as she let no Buxton player have any time on the ball.
Thomas was doing the same on the other side of the field, pushing hard and driving the team forward. The first half passed in the blink of an eye with goals, saves, tackles, shots, passing and superb effort from both sides.
After half-time, Elliott took the gloves and Kingsley came on further forward. Kit dropped into the backline with Logan taking his break.
The game switched from being end to end to more of a midfield battle with the Mini-Millers positivity, drive and determination shining through.
No matter what Buxton had to throw at them, the Millers stood up to this and more. Every player stood to be counted with Jude getting the goal his play has deserved, a superb finish into the top corner from his endeavours to press the goalkeeper.
The whole team throughout the second half, pressed and drove forward with Elliott having only a few saves to make, all thanks to the awesome teamwork from the rest of the team.
When he was called upon, he made some epic saves. New Mills maintained their positivity throughout the half but most importantly their work-ethic to attack as a team but also run back and defend together.
When the final whistle blew, the team’s smiles told their own story. This game was another example of how this team keeps on developing week by week. Every team member continues to work hard each week not only for themselves, but each other. The most important thing is that they are enjoying their football whatever the result each week which is what makes us as coaches and parents proud that this is our team.
Another great week U7s 👏
