Before the match began, both teams and spectators united in a heartfelt one-minute tribute to Poppy Atkinson, a vibrant 10-year-old tragically lost when a car crashed onto a pitch where she was training. Her family described her as a "force of nature," and the tribute reflected the love and respect felt by both teams who carried her memory with them as they took to the field.
Under sunny skies at Benchill, New Mills Juniors U9s faced Richmond Rovers U9s in a thrilling contest that showcased teamwork, determination, and skill from both sides. With both teams only having 7 starters, it meant there were no opportunities for substitutions.
Richmond Rovers got off to a strong start, and were playing well. New Mills rallied magnificently, earning a corner that Stanley converted with precision to equalize. Jackson then turned the tide with a clinical finish Stanley set Jackson up for another chance, only for the Richmond goalkeeper to deny him with an excellent save off the line.
However, just before halftime, Stanley struck again with precision.
Charlie T was a rock in defence, keeping everything safe at the back and frustrating Richmond’s attackers time and again.
Teddy was ever-present up front, always on goal and causing constant problems for the Richmond defence, while Jackson's pressure on the far post kept them under relentless strain.
In the second half, Richmonds hard work paid off with a goal to kickstart their half.
Charlie J was immense in goal, making a series of spectacular saves.
Rhys impressed with a superb free kick, forcing another great stop from the Richmond goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Pavak added composure and strength to the defensive line, working seamlessly with Charlie T and Rhys.
As the final whistle blew, you could see every player had given it there all in what was another fantastic team effort, with Jackson’s creativity and crucial contributions earning him the Player of the Match award.
