It’s the business end of the season for our Hornets and these lads love a bit of silverware to celebrate with at the end of every campaign. This year has been different in so many ways but mainly due to stepping up a level and contesting with the very best of The Stockport Metro League. We had an electric start to the season and as a result the boys were propelled into the top flight. We’ve learnt more about ourselves so far this season than in all the previous three years put together.
The coaches focus hasn’t been on skill-set or improving talent, these boys have this in abundance. What we’ve been looking for is something much more important than that. We’ve questioned them all. As a team and individually. How much do you want it? What are you prepared to do? They are only under 10’s but I know they get it……. These are life lessons, not just football sessions.
This morning they answered everything we have asked with flying colours. To a man (They played like men…. Possible more like Gladiators), every single one of the upped their game. The energy levels were off the radar. We chased every ball and nobody was afraid to get stuck in. Unfortunately for our opposition, they got the brunt of a reaction the coaches have been looking for. The boys were competing for every ball, refusing to be beaten and simply not allowing Offerton any time on the ball.
Then came the rewards…… Albie ⚽️⚽️ was back to his best and grabbed himself a couple of good goals. The second was stunning and he reminded all the parents watching what he is capable of. More impressive was Albie’s work rate. He was making himself available to our defenders and taking the ball deeper where he could then involve the other attacking players. Kai ⚽️ benefited from this perfectly when Frankie found our Maestro out wide, who then weaved his magic before squaring the ball to Kai who smashed the ball home brilliantly. Goal of the game!
Fenn was more than solid in goal. Making super saves and also playing the ball out from the back and setting up the attacks. Finley & Ronan were back in their familiar wing-back positions and both of them worked their socks off. They were also asked to play in other positions and this type of teamwork is paramount to being successful. We will ask all of you to put in a shift, wherever the coaches need you to play. Nobody does this better than Oliver L ⚽️ “Where do you need me?” He asks repeatedly when standing with the coaches. This lad never ever lets you down and deservedly got a great goal himself.
This was a real team effort. Every single one of them has a role to play and Charlie is embracing this more & more as each week passes. Charlie showed us his strengths in holding on to the ball and keeping possession. He then worked back to ensure we were safe at the back. Keep it up Charlie Boy.
Finally, I want to give a special mention to our coaches kids. Continuously over looked for POTM or any other award. These two get more grief than any child probably deserves, especially in recent weeks. We had a chat on the way up to today’s venue about what we expected from them. Frankie & Oliver B were the nucleus to everything positive this morning. They were the engine-room and inspired the other team members to go and match their energy levels and go above & beyond. PROPER HARD WORK!
The Hornets are in the cup 👊
POTM went to Albie 🏆 This is the level Maestro
