Another week, another game against Chinley… funny how fixtures work out. The Scorpions were very much up for this game, all eager to get onto the pitch. It’s brilliant to see as coaches when the players all want to be involved.
It was different this week as it was ‘Silent Support’ week, which means parents can only clap and coaches can say ‘well done’ or ‘good tackle’ all positive encouragement.
As coaches, we took the initiative and in our pre-match team talk told the players they needed to support and coach each other on the pitch. Everyone knew their role and we were ready go. As soon as we kicked off it was clear the team were not only up for this game but they were talking and encouraging each other.
Rocco T and Dylan had early range finding shots saved by the keeper reflecting the attacking stance the scorpions had set up.
Dylan swung in a corner which Rocco T got across the line (not dissimilar to last weeks goal)⚽️
This lit the touch paper and the Scorpions were very much on the front foot. All the attacking players were looking for the right pass and to play the ball forward. Leo picked up the ball and slotted home ⚽️ Not to be outdone, Ted won the ball in midfield and pressed forward and saw his shot saved.. Rocco T was there to pick up the rebound and score⚽️ Ted was fired up and after his early shot was saved, made no mistake the next time with a sweet finish ⚽️
Dylan who was fantastic all morning, swung in a corner which Leo promptly scored from ⚽️
Now, Dylan the gamekeeper turned poacher… picked up the ball in his own half…took it forward and let fly with a screamer ⚽️ Rocco K was busy up and down the pitch, defensively he’s our ‘rock’ … attacking he’s a different player … always looking for a goal.
Another press forward saw Leo cross the ball for Rocco T to score ⚽️ meanwhile at the other end our goalie Frankie the Cat was completely tuned in and was equal to anything that came at him. Alfie was working tirelessly up and down the pitch looking for that opening.
Dayvid had been playing defensively, but moved forward and saw his shot agonisingly hit the post and bounce back out. More pressure saw a corner from Ted curl into the net ⚽️👏🏻 great work from Dylan taking the ball forward to Rocco T who clinically hit home ⚽️
Half time and as coaches we let the team do their own team talk. They knew what they needed to do so we we let them get on with it.
We started the second half just as positive and within minutes Dayvid had knocked it home👍🏻 ⚽️ more flamboyant play was evident with a delightful outside foot flick from Rocco K forward to Leo who picked it up and placed it ⚽️ quickly followed up by another ⚽️
Another instance of provider turned scorer as Rocco K ran from pretty much the half way line and slotted home a great finish ⚽️ Alfie was constantly pressing the Chinley defence and looking to unlock his left (or right) foot.
More switching things around saw Will ghost in on the right wing ⚽️ and slot in a corner from Dylan. Will is our quietest player, but most reliable 👊🏻
Frankie was called into action and tightly held onto the ball…. He let fly with a monster goal kick, which Leo picked up on the half way line, ran through and scored ⚽️ and to round off a great performance, Leo hammered home another ⚽️
Player of the match today was all 9 of the Scorpions. They all played like the team we know they are.
The coaches gave the nomination of PoTM to the team themselves to decide. Still a close call, but Dylan was the choice. Well done Dylan and well done Scorpions 🦂
