Match Report U6s vs Spurley Hey Clarets U6s – Stockport Powerleague 4/5/24 – 9am KO
Today was the start of the miniest of Millers journey in football with their first game of the Stockport Metro Junior League’s Summer League.
All the children had been training together all year as they prepared to take their first steps on their football journey, our first game would be against Spurley Hey Clarets.
With a squad of 10, the coaches both agreed to play 6-a-side to give more players gametime with lots of substitutions throughout the game.
We started with Kingsley in goal, Kit in defence, Leo on the right, Logan on the left, Lily in the centre and Elliott as striker. We spoke before the game about enjoying our first game and having fun and it didn’t take long for the fun to begin.
Leo putting the opponents under pressure with some super tackling, Logan playing his passes and Elliott running at the defence.
Kit and Lily marshalled the midfield well making sure Kingsley had little to do in goal.
After winning the ball in midfield, Lily played a ball out to Logan who managed to get away from the defence and score our first goal – Well done Logan! Spurley Hey then tried to come back but some more tough tackling enabled Leo to cross for Elliott to score our 2nd goal shortly after.
Jude, Thomas, Alistair and Lexi came on as subs and really tried their hardest to keep New Mills on top, Spurley Hey started to get more shots on goal but Kingsley kept us ahead going into the break.
After a short half time rest and a change in goal with Thomas taking the gloves, the 2nd half started with all the enthusiasm of the first.
Jude was trying hard on the left and battled well with his tackling and passing the ball.
Alistair tried to get us forward on the right with Lexi putting in lots of running in the middle. Thomas made a few great saves but couldn’t prevent Spurley Hey pulling a few goals back. A few more subs and after resting Logan and Leo came on to try and push us forward and after some great battling from Lily in the middle, the ball broke to Logan who powered home for another goal. Kingsley played in defence in the 2nd half and showed his composure with his passing the ball out from the back.
New Mills nearly got another goal when Logan took a fantastic corner but it was well defended by Spurley Hey to clear away the danger. We did have a few more chances but the Spurley Hey goalkeeper made a few saves in the second half preventing more goals.
The game carried on with both teams really battling hard, Kit came back on, and showed his tackling and passing with Elliott causing the defence havoc with his running with the ball. Unfortunately, the scoring was finished from our side but the enjoyment continued with lots of effort and great teamwork on show.
By the end of the game, the team performed amazingly well and the smiles on all their faces is what the spectators and coaches loved to see.
Fantastic effort in their first game of football and us as coaches and the parents could not have been prouder of how you took everything you have learned this year and did your best on the pitch. We play again next week and can’t wait to see you progress from week to week, but most importantly, keep your enthusiasm and fun throughout. Well done Mini-Millers!!
