Like Rose said in the Titanic, "it's been 84 years"... well 34 days actually, 34 days since this group of superstars played football together.
No complaints from the parents though who were treated to an extended Christmas break due to the bad weather, the kids on the other hand were raring to go... as were the coaches who all opted for shorts in -1c 💪🏻
We were missing Aiden, Myles and Finn today so with only 2 subs it gave the kids plenty of minutes on the pitch to run around and keep warm.
You don't know what to expect after a month of no football and in the warm up it looked more like a crossbar challenge but the kids started the new year just as they finished the last!
New Mills got off to a fast start with Harrison and Ryan both testing the opposition keeper early on. Arjen Ryan Robben was relentless down the left wing in the first half, he stopped every attack on that side and turned defense into attack, we lost count of how many times he drilled the ball into their area, it was only a matter of time until someone got on the end of one... ⏳️
And just when you thought it might be one of those days, up stepped Harrison. After missing a couple of chances early on, he got himself onto the end of a cross from Ryan to bag his first of the game, no celebration though, he's too cool for that 😎 a 2nd goal in the 2nd half capped off another big shift for Harrison, his Nanna said he had teacakes for breakfast that morning... same again next week please!
The biggest compliment we could give our defenders is that Reuben had another solid performance in goal. When called upon he was there to tip a couple of great efforts around the post. A toe bunger in the 2nd half went straight through his fingers but he said they were that cold he didn't even feel it 🤷🏼♂️
Mia picked up where she left off last year, chewing the coaches ears off about going for a carvery after the game but also bagging herself a great goal in the 2nd half. Controlling a through ball, knocking it out of her feet and smashing it into the corner! She gets herself into some great positions and we can't wait to see how much she improves in the 2nd half of the season, enjoy your carvery Mia 😁
Ned's Mum came to watch him train up at Glossop for the first time this week and said "I didn't realise how aggressive he was" 😤 that's our Ned though, polite, gentle, caring... but when he's kitted up it's a different story! He likes to take the ball and the player but he will pick you back up to make sure your alright... no messing about, he was solid when we needed him today!
Teddy treated us to another peach of a goal, controlling a through ball from Max he faked to shoot with his left foot, put it onto his right and buried one into the bottom corner right infront of the parents, the keeper had no chance with that one! Everytime we lost the ball going forward it was Teddy calling everyone back and organising them into their positions, another tidy game for Teddy, even his left foot made its debut a couple of times 😱
Max was our player of the week, he's been well amongst the goals so far, saving us in a couple of tight games this season and although he was unlucky not to score today he worked his socks off for the team. Kids at this age often struggle when it comes to deciding when to pass or shoot but Max is starting to find the perfect balance now. Just when Glossop thought they were in, Max was there to break up the attack, time and time again he carried the ball forward to start our attacks off and instead of shooting from distance he switched it out wide, some of the diagonal balls to the forwards were a joke 😍 top man Max!
A bitterly cold start to the new year but these lot are warming up nicely at the minute, keep it up Millers! 💛🖤
