On a delightful spring day, New Mills Girls faced off against the formidable Stockport County for the second time in as many weeks. Despite missing players Agnes and Annabella, the team entered the field with determination, boasting a lineup of seven ready and eager players.
The starting lineup featured Ebony guarding the goal, with Millie leading the front alongside Seren, while Emily and Ava held the defensive line.
The match kicked off with both sides displaying commendable prowess, neither conceding control. Emily, Millie and Seren showcased adept passing and tackles, while Ava exhibited remarkable resilience in defence, swiftly clearing any threats from Stockport's advances. Ebony, guarding the net, demonstrated her prowess with several crucial saves, maintaining New Mills' stronghold.
As the game progressed, Jessica and Paige were introduced. Jessica's precise passes carved through Stockport's defence, setting up scoring opportunities for her teammates. Meanwhile, Paige's tenacity in attack resulted in promising shots from Seren and Emily, narrowly missing the mark on occasion.
Despite facing a strong opponent, New Mills held their ground, displaying unity and determination throughout.
The second half saw Millie stepping into the goalkeeper role, here she demonstrated utter fearlessness, with exceptional saves that kept the opposition at bay. Moments of brilliance emerged as Ebony seized an opportunity to push forward, launching a remarkable shot towards the goal. Jessica's strategic positioning in the opposition’s box, added pressure to Stockport's defence. And Seren's attacking prowess also shone through with powerful runs, keeping the momentum alive for New Mills.
In recognition of her stellar defensive performance and contribution to opening up play for her teammates, Ava was awarded Player of the Week. The team's collective effort and improvement did not go unnoticed, as even the referee commended New Mills at the game's conclusion. Expressing admiration for the girls’ progress throughout the league, the referee acknowledged New Mills U9 girls as her favourite team to officiate, a testament to their commendable performance. Overall, it was a thrilling and creditable display from our New Mills Girls today, showcasing resilience, teamwork, and significant progress on the field. Well done girls!
