In what marked the culmination of an impressive inaugural season, our U9 girls' faced off against a tricky Stockport side in their final friendly match. Despite the challenges posed by their opponents, our girls showcased their growth and determination throughout the game, from start to finish.
The match began with Emily demonstrating prowess between the posts, making critical saves and orchestrating play from the back. Ava and Annabella formed a solid defensive partnership, confidently advancing the ball while thwarting Stockport's attacks. Meanwhile, Ebony and Millie tirelessly pressed forward, with Millie's efforts particularly notable in midfield, and Ebony’s confidence in attempting shots on target.
As the game progressed, substitutes Seren, Agnes, Paige, and Jessica integrated into the team, each making valuable contributions. Jessica played well, making good passes through the mid-field, getting the ball from defence and playing ball into attack. Agnes got thoroughly stuck in, with some good runs, and stopped a couple of attacks. Seren helped by attacks and moving forward with the ball, along with Paige, who also played some skilful passes to her teammates.
In the second half, Jessica took over in goal, and saved and distributed the ball effectively. Emily had good possession in the attacking half where she passed the ball well, also unleashed a couple of shots. Ebony did some good chasing, and along with Paige, got stuck in through the mid-field, including a number of shots on goal. Seren continued with her good runs with the ball.
Ava meanwhile had a good run up to the touchline, resulting in a cross that narrowly missed the net. Millie's stunning long-range run and strike transformed the came, followed soon after by Paige's clinical finish, further emphasized our girls’ attacking prowess. Additionally, Agnes's skilful chip over the keeper added to the team's impressive tally.
The match concluded with an awards ceremony for the entire league, where each player received recognition for their dedication and improvement throughout the season. In addition to this, Agnes was awarded player of the week for her tenacity, and skilful play, culminating in a spectacular chip, that secured the team's victory.
As coach, witnessing the girls' growth in confidence, determination, and skill has been an immensely rewarding experience. The Cheshire Girls Football League Stockport Division 2023/2024 season may have drawn to a close, but the journey of this remarkable team is far from over. With their unwavering spirit and commitment, the future holds boundless opportunities for these talented girls. Well done!
