After a disappointing result at weekend, the Millers had to dust themselves down and get back on track. There is no better way of doing so than playing in a Cup Semi Final. NMJFCu13s welcomed recently crowned League one champions JFC Phoenix Flames to the Rec, to compete for a place in the final of the League cup.
'Can they do it on a cold RAINY night in New Mills?' was the question on most people’s lips.
The whistle blew and the rain poured down, and the away side enjoyed the early percent of possession. It wasn't long until the away side took the lead through their striker who used great strength to shield off the Millers centre half to score the first goal of the game. This was on the back of the new Mills keeper making one or two important saves already.
The turning point in the first half was when Logan flew through the air to pull off what only can be described as a world class save. Millers defender's Nate, Luke, Alex, Gene & Ruben knew that they were in for a busy evening and they weren't prepared to disappoint either, showing their togetherness, team spirit, grit and determination.
The Millers midfield of Tom, William and Declan worked tirelessly all evening competing with some very physical and tall lads. Eventually, New Mills found some joy and got some luck as they broke the dubious offside trap for Harvey to tap the ball into the bottom left corner.
You could really see the belief starting to show from the Millers, the away team looked confused and wobbled as new Mills played the ball through the opposition for Max to lay the ball to Harvey, who rolled the defender and smashed the ball into the bottom corner 2-1 half time... game on!
As the second half kicked off, the away team began to dominate possession once again, but the underdogs New Mils was still up for the fight. Save after save from Logan keeping his teammates in the game. New Mills then turn defence into attack hitting Phoenix on the counterattack with a beautiful ball over the top, William who ran from box to box then controlled the oncoming ball then hit it into the roof of the net to double the advantage. Luca and Matheus ran there socks off, as did everyone of their team mates, as they all knew it would take a special performance to beat this very good team.
New Mills had to defend like their lives depended on it for the remainder of the game. Under pressure they then conceded a penalty, which the striker coolly slotted home. Logan then pulled off a double save which can only be described as Premier League quality, he then went on to save a penalty in the dying minutes of the game.
As the final whistle blew there was tears of joy and celebrations as the new Mills supporters ran onto the pitch to congratulate the players on this truly magnificent performance.
What a great advert for grassroots football with both teams giving everything in a truly entertaining League Cup semi final. Thank you for your support as always and such terrible weather conditions too, and for respecting the touchline rulings.
