New Mills Under 18’s 6-4 Stockport Vikings Raiders

The Millers Under 18’s produced a fine performance to overcome an opposition that coach Chris Culkin described as the best his team had faced in the last five years, in what was an incredible contest at Church Lane.

The visitors settled well and it was quite clear that they possessed great quality as they stroked the ball around in defence and kept possession well, while The Millers created a number of early opportunities too as Frank Woodrow, Alex Duncan and Jake Brooks all saw efforts saved.

On 32 minutes The Millers did take the lead, Brooks curling in his trademark corner that eluded everyone and went into the far corner of the net. The goal inspired the visitors and they responded well levelling within two minutes, a clever finish past Noah Smith and they went on to enjoy a period of dominance. It took a fabulous goal for The Millers to regain the lead, Brooks jinking into the area around several defenders before squaring for Woodrow to poke in his 19th goal of the season.

The visitors again took control as half time approached and they levelled in injury time as a corner wasn’t cleared, the loose ball smashed in from six yards out.

Five minutes into the second half and Brooks was the creator again, once again he went past his full back and he pulled back to Harry Lomakin-Rogers who slotted in from close range. Two minutes later it was 4-2 as Alex Capraro smashed in an unstoppable effort from 20 yards out.

Vikings were not done and they fought back, pulling one back on 68 minutes and then levelling the scores four minutes later to put the pressure on the home side. The Millers were not to be denied though as on 78 minutes Brooks set up Woodrow for his 20th of the season and then five minutes late Woodrow turned provider for Kit Maddox to slot home to make it six.

An incredible game of football, the quality from both sides was a pleasure to watch. Harry LR was excellent, Harry Wyatt very good, Kit Maddox kept things ticking over, Alex Duncan put his body on the line time after time on defence, Frank Woodrow looked back to his best, but Man of the Match this week was Jake Brooks, utterly unplayable
