Signol Athletic 1-2 New Mills Under 18’s
For the second Sunday in succession, the Millers U18’s showed their quality, ending the league season with a third consecutive victory and only a poor start to the season, and league politics, prevented them from lifting the league title for a second consecutive season.
The Millers were rocked on the eve of the contest with the withdrawal of Joel Boyes through injury and Kai Harman, Alex Capraro and Max Gravestock all missed the game through illness and injury. With Harry LR holidaying in the Isle of Man, and squeezing in a game of football while he was enjoying the rays, The Millers started the game with just 11 players against a side going into the match with realistic hopes of winning the league title.
The poor playing surface at Brabyns Park meant that the contest was not a classic, but The Millers adapted their game from the start, Frank Woodrow looking a threat on the counter attack, with Jake Brooks doing Jake Brooks things in midfield. Woodrow was forced off with injury on 20 minutes but he bravely returned to action and he was rewarded on the half hour mark, sent clear by Robinson he finished well.
Harry Wyatt and Kit Maddox worked tirelessly throughout the game ensuring that the hosts were forced wide, but they were thwarted in those areas too by a resolute George Pottage and Adam Hooper who produced a Gareth Bale esque display at left back.
On 64 minutes the lead was doubled, Brooks curling a corner just inside the far post for his 18th goal of the season and The Millers were well in control.
Harvey Smith picked up a knock late on, but he battled on too, and although Signol pulled a goal back The Millers never looked in danger. Noah Smith had a comfortable morning with AJ Theyer and Alex Duncan in fine form in front of him. The central defenders could not be separated for Man of the Match, so shared the award. The Millers now move on to focus on cup competitions and they will be the side that everyone in the draw wishes to avoid
