Match report NMJFC Under 8s Hornets - 22/01/23
What a wonderful display of football we were treated to on Sunday morning. The lads all arrived early and that allowed us to get straight on the pitch once the game before had ended, so we had a decent warm-up. This is so important! The Hornets sometimes lack that cutting edge when they go Head-to-Head with the Chapel teams and I think they just over think every passage of play….. But not today, the lads were on fire 🔥
Ollie M went in goal first-half and he is one of our best between the sticks so we gained more confidence and you could see it filter through to our outfield players. Ollie M was solid and his decision making was fantastic. Not only when making saves but his great distribution & knowledge of knowing where to play his goal-kicks allowed the team to build momentum and the attacking chances soon followed.
Finley was holding his own at the back and you know with ‘Finners’ – The bigger the game, The tougher he gets and once again, nothing got passed him! He even smashed the post with a terrific effort and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet again.
Upfront we had Albie ⚽️, Ronan⚽️⚽️ & Oliver B⚽️ rotating those two positions and they were all incredible! All getting goals and also setting each other up. This is a dream as a coach! When the kids are wise enough to know when to play the ball to another player who is in a better scoring opportunity than themselves…… It’s absolute gold!
Oliver L was now making his presence known on the first-half and was adding his calming influence to the team as he knocked the ball around with total confidence, linking up defence with attack. When the Half-Time whistle was blown The Mini-Millers were in total control of the game.
Second-Half Oliver L took the gloves. This was a real battle now and Chapel Colts were playing good football and The Hornets needed to start winning the ball back and being a little more effective with it. Step up Frankie…. He was everywhere! Winning the ball, then demanding the ball back & playing a short passing game that we’ve not really seen before. It was fabulous to watch and as a result of our constant possession on the ball our attacking players were getting their rewards. Ollie M⚽️ was hitting the back of the net now too. Superb👌
The greatest moment of the game arrived in the very last minute when Chapel looked certain to score. We were keen to protect our clean-sheet and as the opposition worked a wonderful move that really deserved a goal but Oliver L produced the most incredible save (with his feet) to deny them. Outstanding doesn’t do it justice - Pure desire does!
Player of the Match was Frankie 🏆 for his link-up play and whole hearted - defensive midfield display.
Well done Hornets - Loads of goals & loads of fun! Lets carry that level of belief into our next match and see what happens.
