Match report NMJFC Under 8s Hornets - Cup Final - 23/04/23
What a treat for the boys to finish their season off with a Cup Final at Silverlands! We were up against a very good Buxton Whites side who got the better of us when we met in this identical fixture last season and the lads were focussed on ensuring it would be their turn to walk up and collect the trophy this year!
The music was pumping and after a wonderful tunnel walk, the Hornets were on the pitch and ready to play. Everybody knew the plan!
Big shout-out Oliver L who offered to take his turn in net! Nobody wants to be in goal in the final but he was absolutely brilliant and didn't put a foot wrong. Finley was under doctors orders not to play but if you know 'Our Finners' there was no way on this earth he wasn't getting involved so we started him on the side-line and just brought him on when we could.
Frankie was at the back and with Ronan on one wing and Albie on the other, the Hornets found their passing game and Oliver B was in on goal before we knew it.
Ollie M looked fantastic when he got his opportunity and we are very fortunate to have such an abundance of attacking talent in this squad and the goals followed. Albie slotted home and The Hornets had some breathing space.
Ronan, Ollie M, Frankie & Ollie L had been doing some extra training on Saturday and you could really see the benefits, particularly from our set-pieces. Ronan delivered a wicked in-swinging corner and Albie was there again to put it in the back of the net!
The Mini-Millers were cruising now. We didn't want the half-time whistle to blow as time after time the lads wowed us with their quality play.
Second-Half Albie took the gloves and was superb. Solid hands when called upon but most impressive was the way he adopted the Sweeper-Keeper role. Both Oliver L & Albie have added this to their game when being in goal and it is amazing to watch. The Hornets needed to dig deep and every single one of them battled and tracked back making sure we could protect our goal.
The final whistle was greeted with cheers and there was a 'Wall of Noise' from The Hornets parents who had witnessed another awesome display from our little super-stars!
Frankie & Oliver B led their team into the grandstand where the cup & their individual medals awaited them. Wonderful scenes for everybody involved and we can't wait to do it all again next year!
Well Done to Oliver L & Albie for going in goal. Both of you were incredible.
A special thank you to all our Hornets Family who are so supportive of everything we do and as coaches i can tell you, we wouldn't want to do it with anyone else!
