New Mills Bees U9 vs New Mills Wasps U9 - 24/09/23
This is it..... the first fixture anyone looks for in a season..... Derby day ! This season there will be a few, but this was the first under 9's derby.
The Bees were much depleted due to some recent departures, so the Wasps graciously agreed to play 6 a side (rather than the standard 7v7) To ensure the Bees could rest a player or two during the game, James Robinson (New Mills U8) kindly agreed to help out .. Huge thanks to Andy Robinson for bringing James along today.
Today the Bees lined up as: Stanley, Rocco, William, Leo, Charlie and Brooke with James ready to come on where needed.
The kick off was as you'd expect, fast and furious with the players knowing their opponents as we all train together. The game was quite even in the early stages with each team battling in midfield to win possession. The Bees managed to break through with a nice counter attack and Leo slotted the ball home for his first of the season. This gave the Bees a lift and soon their possession play began to work. Some great passing moves between Brooke, Charlie and Leo when trying to break forward and equally at the back with Rocco and William threading the ball through to the forwards.
Soon the Bees pushed forward again and Charlie got his first of the game.
Each time the Wasps pushed forward, Rocco was a giant in defence and stopped attack after attack. On the occasion the Wasps managed to get through, Stanley was there to either clear the ball with a huge kick, or hold onto it.
James came on for Will to give him a rest after all the running he'd done. This closed the first half with James really getting involved and making some crucial interceptions and knocking the ball out of play to stop another counter attack.
The second half kicked off and the Bees really began to gel and play as a team, at times the passing was a pleasure to watch as the Bees strung a good amount of passes together. Charlie got on the scoresheet again with a direct free kick and then rounded off his hat trick with a shot that just made it over the line. Brooke was lively and when she could make a forward run and took a few shots that on another day would've been in the back of the net. The Wasps pressed when they had the chance and Stanley made some more good saves, gripping the ball tightly when it could easily have gone over the line) Leo picked up the ball from a great pass and took it down the right, pulled in and shot and made it 2 for him.
James R also came close, what a great contribution playing with players a year older than him, James slotted right in playing in defence or as a forward.
It was the easiest decision today for player of the match... Rocco was unstoppable...he played like someone beyond his years, he was onto every loose ball, stopped the attackers time and again, covered defence when his defensive partner moved further upfield. Rocco is more and more becoming a leader in this team.
It was a fantastic game to watch, everyone was friends before and after the game. The Under 9's are one big team and it was great to see everyone congratulating each other at the end.
